Fall 2006 Retreat A Success

While some last minute cancellations meant a small group this outing, it didn't keep Susan from spreading her serger magic. "If you ever get the opportunity to attend one of these retreats, I highly recommend it," says Katherine, one of this year's attendees. "We had a great time and learned lots of really cool stuff! I even learned how to do serger lace... Susan is a wonderful, intelligent, funny and highly knowledgable individual and I enjoyed being her student for the weekend."

Who Can Attend a Serger Retreat?
We have space for 10 participants. To get the most out of this retreat, you need to know the basics of serging. You must know how to set up a rolled edge, as well as a three- and four-thread overlock stitch, on your machine. You also need to know how to thread your machine and set up a balanced stitch.

You don't have to be a list member to participate in the fun.

What's This All About?
This serger retreat started as a wish voiced by several people on Yahoo's serger list. Some of the gals said it would be wonderful if we could get together in person. At about the same time, several people said that I should consider setting up an event for people who want to get the most from their sergers. The two ideas collided and I came up with this event.

The goal is to make the event affordable and fun. In the planning stage, I kept thinking "serge, share, and socialize." I've tried my best to include activities that past participants and people on the serger list say they like. Complete details for the Fall 2006 Retreat will be posted soon with a retreat itinerary, updated accomodation and travel information, and a resource guide full of tips for good shopping and eating options.

Exploring Easton

www.easton-pa.org lists local attractions, addresses, and links.

www.statetheatre.org is a spectacular live theatre in downtown Easton. The interior is a visual treat.

www.freebridge.net offers local news and events.

Getting to Easton
This city is on the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border, almost directly west of New York City. Poised on the edge of the LeHigh Valley, it's a short drive to Bethlehem, Allentown, and many Pennsylvania-Dutch towns. You can drive to Philadelphia in 2 hours, or take a day trip south and west to the heart of the Amish region.

Flying
The closest is the Allentown-Bethlehem International Airport. Its abbreviation is ABE.

The Newark, New Jersey, airport is also very close, and practically every airline flies into it. (You can see New York City as you arrive because it's just across the water.) In many ways, Newark is the most convenient destination if you plan to spend some extra time in New York City.

From the airport, catch a Trans-Bridge bus for a one-hour trip to downtown Easton. We'll meet you and make sure that you get to the hotel. You need to let us know in advance when you'll be catching the bus. CALL OR EMAIL US BEFORE BOOKING YOUR FLIGHT.

Driving
You can obtain directions and a map by visiting http://maps.lycos.com or www.mapquest.com.
Just type in you departure locations and the place in Easton where you'll be staying.

Busing
From New York City catch a Trans-Bridge bus at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Everyone who attended had a WONDERFUL time, and learned a lot . . . We serged non-stop for five days. We sewed together, learned together, laughed together, shopped together and had an absolute ball. I have had lots of fun weeks in my life, and this has to rank with the best. Susan is just the most superb teacher, friend, and guide.
Kay J. from Central New York State

Everyone was very nice and a lot of laughs were had by all. . . Susan shared her knowledge, inside tips and a ton of her time...she is very professional, yet very down to earth and approachable...and with a great sense of humor, too. And you should see her samples!! They are really something up-close and personal.
Blondie from New Jersey

I had a great time at the Serger Retreat! Everyone shared so many ideas, and we had fun trying new things together.
Karen from Western New York State
